The Continuing Revitalization of HollywoodBy Robert Nudelman, Cinecon 43 attendees will be able to experience many great Hollywood attractions. Our hotel, the Hollywood Renaissance, is located in the Hollywood/Highland complex, which was under construction just a few years ago. Costing over $600 million, Hollywood/Highland also includes the 3500 seat Kodak Theater, the latest home of the Academy Awards, and over 70 stores and restaurants (all price ranges), the Grand Ballroom, the Chinese Theater sixplex, a post office, subway station (connecting from the Valley and Universal City to Downtown Union Station), and recreations of the arch, elephants, columns and other design elements from the Babylonian set of D. W. Griffith's INTOLERANCE. A discount card for stores and restaurants will be available to Cinecon members.
There are also discount coupons for Lickity Split cafe, which is right inside the Egyptian courtyard. The 4m/32r San Francisco Fox Wurlitzer will be played before films at the restored El Capitan Theater. It's worth the price of a ticket just to hear the organ concert before each film. The most recent restoration is the $7 million face lift given the re-renamed Grauman's Chinese Theater. Exterior and interior restoration work, structural improvements, a new sound system and 80-ft. screen are among the new highlights of this world famous Hollywood shrine. |
