Sunday Evening - The Celebrity Banquet

Excitement mounted as banquet time approached because it's a time to socialize with friends and mingle with celebrities. This year the Cinecon Career Achievement awards would honor 4 talented entertainers: noted producer Walter Mirisch (unable to attend the banquet, he received his award earlier this weekend) and 3 wonderful actors Celeste Holm, Warren Stevens, and Elena Verdugo. Besides those entertainers being honored many of our former honorees and their friends also attended the event.

The cocktail reception began at 7:15. The reception area filled up quickly and soon it was elbow to elbow...

...and celebrity to celebrity.

Past Cinecon honoree Marvin Kaplan was on hand to present an award to Elena Verdugo. The two worked together on her 1950s TV show Meet Millie and have been friends ever since.

Slowly people began making their way into the banquet room to take their seats including this cute couple, past Cinecon honoree Coleen Gray and her charming husband Fritz Zeiser.

Celeste and her husband, Frank Basile, have taken their seats on the dais and are ready for the banquet to begin.

As everyone settled into their seats the waiters began serving dinner. After desert and coffee it was time for the awards portion of the evening to begin.

Monday - One last day of films before heading home

The last day of Cinecon is usually a quieter day with many of the out-of-state Cinephiles having to use Monday as a travel day to get back to work on time. For those of us who could stay on day five the focus was on film and we saved some of the best for last.

The morning session began with HETTY KING. This 1970 film short featured famed British music hall headliner Hetty King, who began performing as a child ca. 1885.

Another audience favorite of the weekend was the musical SING, BABY, SING (20th Century-Fox, 1935) starring past Cinecon honoree Alice Faye. She's a singer who loses her nightclub job to a well-publicized society deb. Then her agent decides that a large dose of publicity might get her a better job. To that end he gets her romantically linked to a famous older actor (played by Adolphe Menjou) who, while in a drunken stupor, thinks he's fallen in love with her and refers to her as "Juliet" to his "Romeo". Also in the cast are Patsy Kelly, Gregory Ratoff, Ted Healy and The Ritz Brothers.

RAIN OR SHINE (1930) is a comedy about circus life and was director Frank Capra's first talkie. However, we screened the alternate silent version of the film which was made to show in foreign theatres. The story centers around the struggling Rainey Circus, which performs "rain or shine" and this being a comedy it's always raining. Even though it's a story we've seen before--unscrupulous rivals use every trick in the book to try and shut the circus down--it's still a very entertaining film. It stars Louise Fazenda and Joe Cook, a talented acrobat as well as actor who does his own amazing stunts in the film.

After lunch we started the afternoon session with the Krazy Kat cartoon SOUTHERN EXPOSURE (1934).

Al Jolson stars in the two-color Technicolor musical drama, MAMMY (1930), about a touring minstrel show. Other cast members include Lois Moran, Hobart Bosworth and Louise Dresser. Long believed to have only survived in Black & White, the film has recently been restored to its color version by UCLA from a print that was found in Europe.

The fun Harold Lloyd silent film SPEEDY (1928) has been screened at Cinecon before but a good Lloyd film is always worth another look. His granddaughter Suzanne Lloyd was on hand to introduce the film and share some behind-the-scene stories about it. Lloyd plays Speedy, a guy who wants to help his girlfriend's (played by Ann Cristy) grandfather keep his horse-drawn street trolley running in spite of bad guys who are trying to drive him out of business. The very funny film features a lot of shot-on-location scenes of New York City and a hair-raising chase in the finale.

And last but not least. the final film of the convention was an early Bette Davis film (to celebrate her centennial) from 1932, THE MENACE. Set in England, Bette (in only her fifth film) is the fiancee of a man (played by Walter Byron) who has been convicted of murdering his own father and sent to prison. After escaping to America he gets caught in an oil fire and because of it has to have extensive plastic surgery. Since he now looks completely different he decides to go back home and clear his name by finding the real killer.

The films are done and another wonderful Cinecon comes to an end. Well almost, there's still one more task to be done before we can leave: the Cinecon member survey.

Several people taking the Cinecon survey image

Every year on the last day of Cinecon we ask our members to take a brief survey to let us know what they thought of the show. What they liked or disliked, what they might want to change or see more of. Then we use the information that we get from the surveys to make improvements for future shows. And we always find that our members are eager to share their opinions.

Then it's really over and as we go our separate ways we pause a moment to send our thanks to the great Cinecon staff and all of those amazing volunteers who donated their time to make this show happen. Because of their hard work we Cinephiles were able to spend another marvelous Labor Day weekend indulging in our favorite pastime--enjoying vintage films.
