Sunday Evening - The Celebrity Banquet

Excitement mounted as banquet time approached. Everyone always looks forward to the banquet as a time to socialize with friends and mingle with celebrities. This year the Cinecon Career Achievement awards would be given to 4 wonderful actors Piper Laurie, Alan Young, John Saxon, and Dick Miller. Besides those entertainers being honored many of our former honorees and their friends also attended the event.

And the celebrities also began to arrive.

Here's Mariette Hartley surrounded by fans wanting to talk to her and take pictures. She was invited to present one of the evening's awards.

There was still so much to talk about that no one wanted to leave but eventually all good things must come to an end and so another Cinecon Career Achievement Award banquet becomes history. As we headed off to bed we had only one more day of great films to look forward to.

Monday - One last day of films before heading home

The last day of Cinecon is usually a quieter day with many of the out-of-state Cinephiles having to use Monday as a travel day to get back to work on time. For those of us who could stay on day five the focus was on film and we saved some of the best for last.

The morning session began with another chapter of The IRON CLAW the 15 chapter serial from 1941 about a reporter trying to figure out what's going on in an old house amid secret passages, sinister people and hidden gold. Hopefully everyone caught chapter 10 on Friday and chapter 11 on Sunday. That's 12 down and 3 to go so we might just wrap this serial up next year.

Another popular silent film and our last of the weekend was the unusual WHILE NEW YORK SLEEPS (1920). This episodic trio of tales showed various lifestyles in New York. The hook of this film is that the same 3 actors play different characters in each segment. A woman alone for the night comes face to face with a burglar with unexpected results. A married man has a dalliance with a chorus girl who kills herself because he won't leave his wife. And finally, in the longest sequence, is the story of a poor family and the paralyzed man who must watch, but is powerless to stop, the terrible things that happen to his son.

Leading us into the lunch break was one of the best sound films of the weekend, WAKE UP AND LIVE a delightful 1937 musical starring Alice Faye and Jack Haley. The film revolves around the fake feud of real life radio personalities bandleader Ben Bernie and syndicated columnist Walter Winchell with a subplot about a vaudeville singer (played by Haley) who wants to be a radio star but gets mike fright every time he goes on the air. Alice Faye is a another singer who first uses Haley to help her career and then later helps him get over his mike fright.

After lunch we started the afternoon session with HELLO NAPOLEON a silly comedy short starring Lloyd Hamilton who is having trouble with loads of rabbits and then later with a couple of asylum inmates that want to operate on him.

Our next film was a rarely screened drama from 1933 ONLY YESTERDAY in a beautiful new restoration by NBC/Universal. It tells the story of how a young woman (played by Margaret Sullavan in her film debut) faces life as a single parent in the 1920s after a one-night-stand leaves her pregnant. Billie Burke is great as the free-thinking aunt she lives. Other cast members include John Boles, Edna May Oliver and Reginald Denny.

For John Wayne's centennial we decided to run an atypical non-western. A MAN BETRAYED (Republic, 1941) is a slick, fast-moving detective yarn with an unusual light-hearted tone starring Wayne as a young lawyer trying to solve his friend's murder. He is at first hindered then later helped by the crime boss' daughter played by Frances Dee. Others in the cast include Edward Ellis, Wallace Ford and Ward Bond.

And last but not least the final film of the convention was the lightweight romantic comedy starring a very youthful Tyrone Power and a vivacious Loretta Young, CAFE METROPOLE (1937). Adolphe Menjou is a conniving restaurant owner who blackmails Power into romancing wealthy Loretta in the hopes of getting his hands on some of her money.

And so another wonderful Cinecon ends and it's time to say goodbye to the Cinecon staff.

It seems like the show had just begun and then too soon it's already time to leave. And so we make our way out of the theater and take that walk across the Egyptian Theater courtyard to Hollywood Boulevard to climb into our cars and head off.

People walking out of the Egyptian courtyard image

As we leave we send our thanks to the great Cinecon staff and all of those wonderful volunteers who donated their time to make this show happen. Because of their hard work we Cinephiles were able to spend another wonderful Labor Day weekend indulging in our favorite pastime of watching vintage films. Time for all of us to make our way home to rest up for next year.
